Postcard Story Contest
Submission Guidelines
What can you do with 250 words? The Postcard Story is the quintessential example of distilled writing. The concept is simple: write a story that can fit on a postcard. Narrative or prose poetry, fiction or nonfiction, funny or dead serious… It’s all good, as long as you stick to the word limit.
Your starting point is the image you see below - the watercolour illustration titled "The Tale", by artist Phoebe Kates. Think of a story that would be the perfect match to go on the other side of the postcard. No need to be literal: we don’t expect you to describe the piece (not a caption contest!) or to cuff your words to the visual prompt. The image is your tarmac — use it to get some speed and then take off to the sky.
Entry is free and open only to 2012 Women’s Words attendees registered for any of the courses. First prize: a $200 coupon towards a Faculty of Extension, Writing and Editing (W&E) course, which can also be used for a Women’s Words 2013 course. The winning piece will be published in Other Voices, Journal of the Literary and Visual Arts (Fall 2012 issue). Second and third places get $100 and $50 W&E coupons. Results will be announced in August, and a reading of the winning entries will take place at Liberal Studies' ArtsMash event on Thu, Dec. 6, 2012.
To enter, download the entry form by clicking here, fill it out, and staple it to two copies of your piece. Your piece must be typed and include, on the top of the page, the story title and your student ID number, which can be found on your course confirmation letter once you register. Do not write your name on the story.
Bring your submission to Women’s Words and place it in our “contest box” (available at the Faculty of Extension from June 1-10). You may also choose to mail your submission until June 10, 2012 to Liberal Studies, Faculty of Extension - 2-200 Enterprise Square - 10230 – Jasper Ave, Edmonton, Alberta, T5J 4P6. No email submissions will be accepted. One entry per person, please.
